'Mothers are meant to cry at weddings,' she thought.
"It's a daughter's duty," her father's words still rung in her ears.
Instinctively, she turned to meet his gaze in the front row - his eyes seemed to glow with greed. His wife sat slumped next to him, her face awash with sorrow, utterly unable to look up at the daughter she had failed to protect.
"What use is a dukedom without a penny, girl?"
'As useless as a father who uses his daughter as a bargaining chip,' she mused before saying aloud to her mercantile husband-to-be, "I do."
